Things you may want to know before meeting us

Get answers to your questions about the culture and life at Smiths, as well as what to expect during the recruitment process.

Application process

One of our recruiters will contact you directly if you have been selected for an interview.

The application process may take longer than expected but your recruiter will keep you updated throughout the process.

Every interview is a two-way conversation. We will ask you about your skills and experience, but we will also give you the opportunity to find out more about us and the role you’re applying for.

We suggest that you take the time to review our wider website before speaking to us, and, in particular, that you familiarise yourself with our Smiths Leadership Behaviours which describe the characteristics we look for, support and reward in our people.

If you require any reasonable adjustments during the recruitment process for any reason, please let us know. Your disability should not deter you from applying, though you do not have to disclose your disability at the recruitment stage. We are committed to providing equal opportunities and welcome applications from all qualified candidates, including those with disabilities.

Please contact your recruiter to discuss anything we can do to support your application.

Health and wellbeing

Our internal THRIVE network provides a platform to support physical, emotional, intellectual and financial well-being. We have dedicated mental health first aiders installed across our business and we have various initiatives to support mental health and wellbeing. Find out more here: Empowering culture and shared purpose | Smiths Group

Along with health, the safety of our colleagues is a priority for Smiths, and is overseen by our Vice President, Safety & Health in our Senior Leadership Team. You can read about our safety commitment and record here.

We continually strive to create a workplace where all our colleagues feel safe and respected. Through our Diversity, Inclusion and Equality approach, we organise a programme of #IAmRemarkable workshops and support a range of employee-led affinity groups, including:

  • Veteran Employee Resource Group
  • Black Employee Network
  • Pride Coalition
  • Women@Work

Approach to sustainability

Our communities are important to us, and we know that colleagues find community outreach and support programmes an enjoyable and rewarding experience. We run an annual, whole-of-company community project day (Smiths Day), have a Global Volunteering Policy that offers every colleague one day of paid leave for volunteering activity, and run numerous employee-led fundraising activities.

Our Smiths Group Foundation is a charitable foundation that is focused on expanding access to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths skills in the communities in which we operate, linked to our purpose of engineering a better future.

In FY2022, Smiths committed to ambitious net zero targets that align us with the UN’s critical global climate objectives and the ambition to limit global warming to 1.5°C. We will achieve this by delivering net zero emissions from our operations by 2040 and our value chain by 2050. Find out how we plan to achieve this here.

Culture

How do we make sure we remain dynamic, inclusive and focused on delivering results that create value for all our stakeholders, including you?

We are guided by the Smiths Leadership Behaviours, a framework for our culture which distinguishes Smiths for our people and our customers, and is why people choose to join Smiths and build their careers with us.

On top of driving our performance and enabling our growth strategy, our Behaviours anchor our Values - integrity, respect, ownership, customer focus and passion – which everyone in Smiths, in any role, lives every day, in every action and decision that we make.
